Lax Lacks Numbers

Team set to start season with just 12 players

Last year, the women’s lacrosse had a monumental season that culminated in the school’s first winning record in the sport’s short history. This year, the team is struggling to simply field a full team.

With preseason practices well underway, there are just 12 players on the team’s roster, a far cry from the 18 from last year, and only enough to fill out a starting lineup – with no substitutions.

Of those who have quit, roughly 20 players still attend Wilkes. That group includes last year’s captains Kat Edwards, Analicia Jost, and Shannon McDonald, as well as the team’s top two scorers, forwards Brittney Hodnik and Melissa Polchinski, who combined for 208 of the team’s 357 points.

The sudden exodus has raised questions about why so many players are leaving the program.

Although a concrete reasoning for the substantial drop-off is inconclusive, there are varying explanations all across the board.

“There are many reasons for the lack of numbers,” said athletic director Addy Malatesta. “Retention is always an issue; although this is a drastic drop, it’s a cycle. Class schedules, heart, philosophical differences, and coaching are all possible reasons.”

According to both Malatesta and head coach Kammie Towie, one of the biggest challenges for the program is the lack of high school lacrosse in the area. With so few high schools offering lacrosse locally, recruiting is a tough obstacle.

Malatesta said it’s hard for a program like Wilkes to build a solid foundation because the program is so young and there have been three different coaches in eight years.

“Unfortunately there’s this level of frustration that’s created this dark cloud, and it seems like it has caused a domino effect,” said Malatesta. “It used to be fashionable to play a sport with your friends, now it’s fashionable to leave with your friends and that’s kind of scary.”

Sophomore Carissa Clark agreed, citing an instance where one girl quit and three followed her immediately after.

“It was as if one of them was not on the team, then none of them could be,” commented Clark. “A lot of us who have stayed aren’t very happy with the girls who decided to leave. They left us when we needed them, they were part of the team and it makes it very hard to reunite as a team again.”

Towie stated that many past and recent recruits joined the team because they could see themselves playing at Wilkes University.

Hodnik, a senior who left the team “because of coaching more than anything else,” sees it differently.

“On my recruiting trip people were telling me how fun it was going to be and to come here,” said Hodnik. “I didn’t think that division three lacrosse was going to be this stressful, this much time, and this much of a hassle.”

McDonald also left the team due to difficulties with the coaching.

“The main reason I left was due to the fact that there was no respect for the coaching staff,” said McDonald. “Many returning girls had issues with the specific coaching staff… They didn’t believe in the coaching tactics or their morals.”

Malatesta, however, does not feel coaching is the main issue. Players are given the opportunity to disclose their unhappiness with the program through the player response surveys. These forms are similar to the Student Response Surveys (SRS Forms) filled out by students to leave comments regarding their classes.

“Not everyone is going to be satisfied,” said Malatesta. “It’s an opportunity to write and vent about anything. We have seen negative comments, which are reviewed with the coach, but they are anonymous, and it’s no more than any other sport gets.”

Malatesta feels that the commitment, in some cases, becomes too much, and athletes make a choice to walk away because it is not as meaningful as it once was.

“A lack of love for the game was never part of leaving,” said McDonald. “There were a lot of issues going on in with the team behind the scenes.”

According to both Towie and Malatesta, the struggling economy combined with rigorous academic schedules is partly to blame. With the country suffering from the worst economic recession since the Great Depression, many athletes are taking jobs to help suppress the financial burden of the college education.

“I think a lot of student athletes are obtaining work study or part-time jobs,” said Malatesta. “Parents are having a tougher time making ends meet; if you can alleviate some of the burden I can understand that.”

“Some students may not have a problem managing academics, a job, a team sport, and a social life,” said Towie. “For some it just becomes a pyramid of priorities with the team sport cascading to the bottom.”

Towie ensures that she balances practices around students’ academic schedules, even arranging study halls assuring players time to devote to their schoolwork.

“Sometimes this just isn’t enough and girls feel overwhelmed and leave the team, to focus on academics,” said Towie.

Despite the dwindling numbers, recruiting efforts have not slowed down. As of press time, close to 30 potential athletes have been on campus for recruiting tours. Towie has also hung posters around the school, advertising for women to come out for the team. According to McDonald, players who have left the team have also been contacted via email by the coaching staff, inviting them back to the team for the upcoming season.

24 negative comments? what are you looking at? if these weren't true all the players wouldnt just be sitting around waiting to comment. come on that is just ridiculous. true there are hate SRS forms filled out by failing students and non starters even, but every single one? if there were a few it could be understood to be filled out by a dissed player, but when ALL of them share similar stories and complaints it is genuienly the COACH
What has happened ??

If any school fired an employee based on SRS forms then every teacher with a failing student would be without a job. It is easy for any administration to see "hate forms" or "reviews" SRS forms are behind the times anyways. As a teacher of 15+ years I have seen a huge change in student attitudes and priorities. This article appears to be fabricated for those who wanted to rant and rave about the issue. This is obvious by all the negative comments from just a few people who were sitting and waiting for this article to come out. I would be curious to see from whom or where the authur came about this topic.

Rachel captured everything perfectly in her message. I agree with everything she said. Kammie is unprofessional and abusive. And I am friends with people on the team as well and they are not mad at me for quitting and if they were then they would have not asked me to come back to play. I think that if the beacon wants to get to the bottom of the issue they should survey every girl that quit in the past two years and ask them why. This way there is not any speculation.

I didn't quit because I had no heart. I quit because I was fed up being verbally and mentally abused. I didn't want to go another year playing for a coach like that. When Kammie emailed the players who quit I responed "no I still don't want to play for you." She plays mind games, that doesn't make for a better player. You can't grow if everyday you're being yelled at and told you basically suck at what you're doing. I have lots of problems with his women. First off don't tell your players to try new things during a game against an easy team, and then when they try new things yell at them and pull them out of the game. Another thing is you can be friendly with your coach, but not FRIENDS. That's not her job she is not there to be your buddy. So it's very wrong to be texting your players at 2 in the morning. What could you possibally need to say at that time, Im sure it can wait til practice. Because it should be someting about lacrosse and not personal issues. The AD needs to open their eyes, its clearly the coaching because if you ask all 20+ girls we are all going to say we quit the game we love because of the coach. oh yeah Carissa don't speak on behalf of them team saying that everyone still playing hates the girls who quit, because it's not true. Don't put your views on the whole team. You're the only one who seems to be unhappy with any girl who quit. James Smith Jr. what games are you watching do you not see or hear how she is coaching. Are you not watching how her negitivity is affecting the players. Open your eyes!

James Smith Jr,
As a former player, I know what it was like to play for this new head coach. You on the other hand, do not. However, if you're a spectator as you say you are, you would have seen the rants and raves that girls are talking about. What you don't know is what went on at practices, in the locker room, and before games. Therefore, telling us to "grow up and put the alcohol down" is a little out of line. Also, I would say constructive criticism is a bit of an understatement.

Be careful what you wish for the next coach could be a total D bag and 10x's worse than what you had. I went through this on my highshool basketball team we had more people quit inlcluding myself with the new coach after our original coach was forced to quit for similar complaints. Good Luck -Thad-
What is Wilkes Doing?!
Wed Feb 17 2010 13:21
I think this article was very well written and reported a very newsworthy story. I think it subtly addressed the coaching issue and other reasons why some of the girls may have quit. However, I think it is the comments here that really show what people think and based on them I would have to agree that it is the coach who is the largest cause of the problem.

I feel very sorry for the girls who would like to play lacrosse for Wilkes but do not because of the coaches. Especially Emily who after 3 years, chose not to play her Senior year because of the disrespect she felt from the coach(es).

What is the Athletic Department going to do? Is this the kind of morale they want any of their sports teams to have?

I really hope not.

I believe that this is all just ridiculous. The coaching staff is the reason for so many of the girls team quitting. So many of them seemed to state that it is clearly the reason. I think their team will grow exponentially with a new coach.

I think the editor did a fine job at writing this article. Kammie and the AD both sugar coated this issue. The economy is a bunch of bullshit and everyone knows that. I know girls on the team who have jobs. Also, I know all the girls who quit could juggle jobs, school load, clinicals, observing, and a sports... they just choose not to. In response to the alcohol comment, those girls were not removed off the team. One of the incidences happened when the girl wasn't even playing that year. If these two girls wanted to be on the team, Kammie would let them, regardless of alcohol consumption or not. Basically the fact of the matter is that Wilkes needs to hire a new coach.

To the Editor

Your credibility as an Author should really be investigated. First you can't even spell the head coaches name right "Towie" glad you did your research on that one. Second you have written an article clearly designed to bash the head coach and not address the actualy situation at hand. Your article clearly follows the biased views of 2-3 ex players . Where are the positive reviews from past and current players. Not everyone left the team on a negative note. If I remember correctly the twins who were high scorers on the team left to pursue academics at a different campus and not because they hated the head coach. Lets face it this article is pure opinionated reviews from childish college girls who couldn't hack it!!! Peace :-)

During last season at the Moravian away game Towie was sreaming and ranting at the officals, actually harassing them. She was almost kicked out of the game. As a parent of a player that moment was a horrid sight. I could not believe that this woman was representing her team and her school in such an absurd manner. She has done similar to the players while they were playing. It was hard a parent and as a spectator watching a grown woman making a fool of herself. It is no wonder that she is having difficulty finding people to play for her. I would not want to play under a gorwn women who cannot control her emotions. Also, I have heard from my daughter that she texts messages the girls about personal and social matters. That does not sound professional to me.

This article did not bring justice to the issue at hand. The Wilkes lacrosse head coach is the reason that so many girls have left the team, not the economy or because people thought it was cool. If that was the case wouldn't there be a dramatic lose of players on other sports teams? As a former player I know first hand the issues that the 2009 team saw. When playing the coaching staff would mentally and emotionally abuse the player. Many girls were constantly in tears and not able to play their game due to the fact that they were constantly yelled at and insluted. . She would play mind games and scare you to make you work harder instead of instilling fear. She would also threathen players before games to the point that they were in tears on the field playing a game. People on the team that quit did so because they were mentally and emoitonaly drained. We did not quit because of the other reasons mentioned in this article. The coaching staff is horrible. The only way that Wilkes lacrosse will be succesful will be when here is a new head coach. In fact if there was a new coach now Wilkes would have a team of around 26 girls and we would be playoff material. But instead there is a team of 11 player many who were not recruited and some who have never played before. I have friends that are still on the team and when I ask them how is practice they respond with words such a "joke" "easy" "pathetic" those do no sound like words that would describe a division three team. Many of these girls only play because they feel bad for the situation or because they have never quit anthing in their life. Fix the coaching and there will be a great team.

I have been a long time supporter of many Wilkes programs including Lacrosse and have watched many games over the past few season with the new Head coach. I would like to note that among these years the team has had the best team numbers as well as the best overall wins. I'm sure this is one thing that the girls who quit will take sole responsibility for but lets face it without a coach there is no team. College sports are not higschools sports and as mentioned below regarding two players with serious alchool consumption and poor judgment problems It would seem that those who quit need a scapegoat to make themselves feel better and to smooth thing over with there parents covering up the real reason they have quit such as not being able to put the alchol down and making a practice. Girls get your act together and grow up! College is not about getting a pat on the back for a job poorly done , it is about preparing for the future and if you can't take constructive criticism from a sports coach you are seriously in trouble when you hit the real world. I look forward to this years season watching the remaining devoted players giving it there all as a TEAM.

I am glad this article has finally brought to light the real issues of the Women's Lacrosse Team. Everyone always wants to blame the players, but after how many years now, and the results and comments from all the players I think its time Wilkes University gets off their highhorse and looks at the coaches. Coaches are there to refine skills, help to build character, and embrace the passion of the sport. I have heard absolute horror stories about the coach playing mind games with the players and plotting them against each other, as well as naming them captain and then taking that title away from them for no good reason, or even threatening them with the title. Wilkes has the opportunity to be a team to reckon with in the MACC, and past teams have proved that, but they need a coach that will actually ethically and morally do the job so the players can actually have someone to look up to and respect. The AD needs to open up their eyes, start reading the forms, start hearing the players too. These players stood up to the constant mind games and disrepect, they didn't walk away from the love of the game, if that were the case why would they be trying to organize an intramural one??? I think the girls that walked off the team were frustrated and just wish someone would listen to them. I think after how many years now of losing some of the most talented players in the MACC that Wilkes should start investigating whats really going on here.

Forget about following the NCAA rules. What about following the Law? The Coach was a champion at texting while driving in fact some of the player would choose not to drive in her van because they were nervous and all of these complaints were in the SRS forms. She would also bring her emotions from her life and take them out on the team, and while driving. When on spring break we were taken to Sonic for dinner. How could we excel as players when were we not even consume the right nutrition before a game.
