Lax Lacks Numbers

Team set to start season with just 12 players

Updated: Monday, February 15, 2010

Last year, the women’s lacrosse had a monumental season that culminated in the school’s first winning record in the sport’s short history. This year, the team is struggling to simply field a full team.

With preseason practices well underway, there are just 12 players on the team’s roster, a far cry from the 18 from last year, and only enough to fill out a starting lineup – with no substitutions.

Of those who have quit, roughly 20 players still attend Wilkes. That group includes last year’s captains Kat Edwards, Analicia Jost, and Shannon McDonald, as well as the team’s top two scorers, forwards Brittney Hodnik and Melissa Polchinski, who combined for 208 of the team’s 357 points.

The sudden exodus has raised questions about why so many players are leaving the program.

Although a concrete reasoning for the substantial drop-off is inconclusive, there are varying explanations all across the board.

“There are many reasons for the lack of numbers,” said athletic director Addy Malatesta. “Retention is always an issue; although this is a drastic drop, it’s a cycle. Class schedules, heart, philosophical differences, and coaching are all possible reasons.”

According to both Malatesta and head coach Kammie Towie, one of the biggest challenges for the program is the lack of high school lacrosse in the area. With so few high schools offering lacrosse locally, recruiting is a tough obstacle.

Malatesta said it’s hard for a program like Wilkes to build a solid foundation because the program is so young and there have been three different coaches in eight years.

“Unfortunately there’s this level of frustration that’s created this dark cloud, and it seems like it has caused a domino effect,” said Malatesta. “It used to be fashionable to play a sport with your friends, now it’s fashionable to leave with your friends and that’s kind of scary.”

Sophomore Carissa Clark agreed, citing an instance where one girl quit and three followed her immediately after.

“It was as if one of them was not on the team, then none of them could be,” commented Clark. “A lot of us who have stayed aren’t very happy with the girls who decided to leave. They left us when we needed them, they were part of the team and it makes it very hard to reunite as a team again.”

Towie stated that many past and recent recruits joined the team because they could see themselves playing at Wilkes University.

Hodnik, a senior who left the team “because of coaching more than anything else,” sees it differently.

“On my recruiting trip people were telling me how fun it was going to be and to come here,” said Hodnik. “I didn’t think that division three lacrosse was going to be this stressful, this much time, and this much of a hassle.”

McDonald also left the team due to difficulties with the coaching.

“The main reason I left was due to the fact that there was no respect for the coaching staff,” said McDonald. “Many returning girls had issues with the specific coaching staff… They didn’t believe in the coaching tactics or their morals.”

Malatesta, however, does not feel coaching is the main issue. Players are given the opportunity to disclose their unhappiness with the program through the player response surveys. These forms are similar to the Student Response Surveys (SRS Forms) filled out by students to leave comments regarding their classes.

“Not everyone is going to be satisfied,” said Malatesta. “It’s an opportunity to write and vent about anything. We have seen negative comments, which are reviewed with the coach, but they are anonymous, and it’s no more than any other sport gets.”

Malatesta feels that the commitment, in some cases, becomes too much, and athletes make a choice to walk away because it is not as meaningful as it once was.

“A lack of love for the game was never part of leaving,” said McDonald. “There were a lot of issues going on in with the team behind the scenes.”

According to both Towie and Malatesta, the struggling economy combined with rigorous academic schedules is partly to blame. With the country suffering from the worst economic recession since the Great Depression, many athletes are taking jobs to help suppress the financial burden of the college education.

“I think a lot of student athletes are obtaining work study or part-time jobs,” said Malatesta. “Parents are having a tougher time making ends meet; if you can alleviate some of the burden I can understand that.”

“Some students may not have a problem managing academics, a job, a team sport, and a social life,” said Towie. “For some it just becomes a pyramid of priorities with the team sport cascading to the bottom.”

Towie ensures that she balances practices around students’ academic schedules, even arranging study halls assuring players time to devote to their schoolwork.

“Sometimes this just isn’t enough and girls feel overwhelmed and leave the team, to focus on academics,” said Towie.

Despite the dwindling numbers, recruiting efforts have not slowed down. As of press time, close to 30 potential athletes have been on campus for recruiting tours. Towie has also hung posters around the school, advertising for women to come out for the team. According to McDonald, players who have left the team have also been contacted via email by the coaching staff, inviting them back to the team for the upcoming season.

As for the players still on the team, they are moving forward, looking ahead to the upcoming season, and sticking together with the few players they have left.

“It may or may not be a hard season, but we will make the best of it,” said Clark. “We all made a pact to stick together through it no matter what.”

James Smith Jr. I do not care if she loses her job, she is a horrible person tht has done things to us. She influenced me to come to a school that is horrible to play the sport I love and then ruined it for me. Also, her husband is the bread winner and she does not contribute anything compared to him. I feel like she needs to learn a lesson about life and how to properly treat people. Once again, you do not know anthing about the situation or the girls that played. You are on the outside looking in and you have no business to get into our personal business if you are not correctly educated on the matter at hand. And if you have such a problem with the comments to this article how about you don't comment anymore because you are starting issues through the un educated things that you are saying.

I don't really care one way or the other, but I just wanted to respond to James' comment about how the players shouldn't threaten the coach's job security. You do realize that her job--the one Wilkes pays her to do--is run a successful lacrosse program. Whether or not SOME of these girls are overreacting is irrelevant if others are also coming forward: when we look at the numbers (# of girls who quit, # of first time players, etc) and compare consistent stories, it becomes clear that the coach was not meeting the expectations of her position. If that's the case, Wilkes should review this case with more scrutiny (for both sides) and act accordingly. Claims that she should be immediately fired are premature at best and callous at worst, but they're no worse than James' seeming clairvoyance about her innocence. If these girls feel the case was not given thorough attention by Wilkes, I don't think it's an unreasonable request to take another look. Despite what some commenters would have you believe, there is no statute of limitations on this issue: she's still a coach and, quite obviously, the team lacks numbers.
Takes responsilibity for actions

Respect is the right of everyone....when you are an adult and you have responsibilities maybe you should remember that there are consequences for your actions. Furthermore, if the coach has done nothing wrong she has nothing to worry about.

This situation is obviously out of control. It makes me sick to read some of these posts. First do you understand you are threatening the livelyhood of another human being who has financial responsibilities, possibly a family to care for etc... you girls are treating this person like it's as simple as trhowing away a dirty rag, it's not. Maybe one day you will understand how important it is to have a job that supports your life. Imagine when you finally graduate, get a job, and your parents are no longer paying for your car, insurance, apartment, food, clothing, and now you have thousands of dollars in student loans to pay back. You have all thes financial obligations but hey its no big deal because you have a job right??? Wait then comes along a coworker who just doesn't like you and decides to try and get you fired for no reason other than a personalit clash (sound familiar). Say this coworker is succesful and now you no longer have a job to pay all those bills and you can't find a new job. This coach never harmed any of you nor did she force you to do anyting you didn't want to do so why don't you just regress and let the current team and future seasons decide the fate of the program. You girls are old news! You talk about morals but you gang are the bunch that need to seriously reevaluate your morals.I am so glad my girl doesn't associate with any of you!

Have a nice day

I play for the team currently and this will be my second season. The girls that quit the team are speaking the truth about the coaching situation. Although, I am currently on the team I would quit in a heartbeat. The only reason that I stay on the team is because I would like to be a grad assistant in the future and my chances will be better if I finish my lacrosse career. I had a horrible year last year in terms of being verbally harassed, as well as constantly embarrassed by the coaching staff. This year the team is not a serious sport at all. Our running workouts lack meaning, our practices are lacking player to make sense of any offensive or defensive setups. She is not as horrible as she used to be, but this is due to the fact that she needs to be nice to us or she will only have 10 players and will most likely have to forfeit her season. None of the girls that quit deserve the insults that are being provided by some of the people on this commenting section. The girls that quit had every right to and in fact I wish I had the courage they did. The majority of the girls on the team are not mad or upset with the girls that quit and I consider each one of them my friend. I wish something would be done about the coaching situation so that I and all of my friends could play together again.

This last comment just shows your lack of any common sense and limited intellectual capacity. The AD and coaching staff have already stated there views on the topic via an interview. They would have no reason to further discuss anything unless another interview was conducted. This is just common sense but from viewing all of your outrageous posts I can tell "common sense" is a complete stranger to this pack of bigots.

The best part of all these comments is those of you who played for Kammie before can tell what comments came from her. That makes my day.

32 girls that would be great I bet they are all playing on your intramural team right now aren't they? Oh they aren't then where will they come from? That would be the largest team on the conference probably a new record when added to the current team roster.... Maybe you should coach the team since you should be graduating soon or maybe you just can't get those passing grades yet. "MOM" in a past Beacon article your old coach was stated to really focus on intensive conditioning and nobody complained but when current coaching staff do the same it is claimed to be "too much work" , "too hard", or "mental abuse" for making you run. Is it true girls 4 years ago were devoted more to team sports than they are now? Maybe they were just tougher back then. You said your past coaches were cosistent I guess not consistent enough to come back after 1 year and 2years. Makes you wonder if they saw the problems with girls like you complainers and bailed before a mutiny was launched against them. Everyone keeps mentioning there best friend I mean old assistant coach Julia Steier as there primary candidate for Head coach. Is she currently looking for a coaching position? Did she promise you all a case of Miller if you opened up the head coach job for her? This article truly is biased it includes one current players quotes and two ex player quotes stating the same exactl thing. This seems to be a Hodnick / McDonald article.

As someone who has been coached by 3 different coaches during my 4 years at Wilkes, I can attest to the lack of problems before the current staff showed up! In 2006 we had a great, tight knit team because we had great coaches who were consistent and organized. That is what the Wilkes Lacrosse program is lacking. Consistent, experienced coaches who take their job seriously. The lack of heart and passion is because there has been a lack of appropriate example. When you see disorganization, lack of experience, instability and lack of passion everyday it is hard to convey those things yourself.
Bottom line, if a new coaching staff was implemented tomorrow, there would be 32 girls coming out for the lacrosse team. end of story.
